Classless Characters

Most Characters have Classes or else follow a template that gives them multiple HD and abilities. Typically, only major characters develop - player characters, classed NPCs and antagonists with classes. Other characters may need to, eventually, develop a class - if a Monster (or Classless Character) becomes a Henchman, what can the party do? Monsters, as is, do not have development - only different variants.

For characters who do not already have a class, such as 0th level characters, children and many forms of monster, they may take a Class of their choice but are considered Inexperienced - they count as a 0th Level version of that Class and must gain XP to qualify for 1st Level.

If a character has a pseudo-Class from their template (for example an Orc Warrior NPC is not a classed-fighter) they must, instead, treat their new class as a Dual Class. They do not, however, lose XP for using racial abilities or thac0 or Saving Throws based on their original Hit-Dice. They do NOT gain Hit Dice from Level until their Level is greater than their original Hit Dice - likewise, their thac0 and Saves do not improve until they are high than their Base thac0 and Saves.
