Melee Range

melee range = touch range + reach of weapon

for every size increase a weapon has beyond Large, increase its Reach by 1. For every size increase a weapon has below its starting size, decrease its reach by 1. Below 1, half it and continue to half it.

If a weapon's reach is greater than the character's touch range+1*, then attacks made within 1/2 Melee Range suffer -5 to hit or are considered Improvised Weapons, measuring from center of one tile to another. This creates issues with pikes (reach 3 vs the modified touch range of 2 for medium characters). Meanwhile natural attacks, brawling and wrestling to not suffer this.

  • consider changing this if they're tiny or smaller cos this is gonna have problems otherwise, +1 for small or greater and half it as per weapon sizes for smaller characters

Old ideas, don't use these:

(include touch range and weapon range)

(weapons that have range greater than 2 suffer a -5 To-Hit penalty when used at Touch Range, unless used as Improvised Weapons) for every size increase a weapon has, increase its effective reach by 1. If a character is at least two size categories larger than a weapon, decrease its reach by 1 for every size category beyond this down to a minimum of 1.

or reach = multiplier for touch range. for every size category you have above a weapon, decrease its reach by 1. for every size category a weapon is changed after the first, increase its reach by 1. So a Huge Pike (for an Ogre) has a Reach of 4. For a giant (huge), with touch range 2, they have an effective reach of 8. A gigantic giant, however, with touch range 3 finds the huge pike (reach 4) less useful because they are so big, decreasing its reach to 3. This still gives them an effective reach of 9.

Within 1/2 reach, attacks with weapon are treated as being an improvised weapon. Brawling, Wrestling and Natural attacks suffer no effects.

older ideas:

based on size?

weapons multiply their touch range by their melee reach OR add the reach, whichever is greater, providing their size is smaller than the weapon.

If the character is larger than the weapon, decrease the effective reach by 1 +1 for each additional size category they are larger than the weapon, then ADD the reach to their touch range to get their melee range. For example, a reach 3 pike is a large weapon; it increases a medium character's touch range of 1 to 3. In the hands of an ogre, a large weapon ADDS 2 to their Touch Range of 1 to give them Touch Range of 3. If the weapon were huge and it had reach 3

tag double touch range, weapons that have "reach 2" multiply it by 2. If a weapon has a size category that is two or less bigger than the character, no modifier. For every size category before it, increase reach by 1. For every size category a weapon has a
