Paladin Vows
Paladin Vows
Interaction - None
Effects - The character has taken several vows they must live by. They must pick a number of Vows upon becoming a 3rd Level Paladin and must live in accordance to them for the rest of their life.
The character must take 3 Major Vows. In place of a Major Vow, a character may take 2 Minor Vows.
The standard Paladin Vows are Charity, Self Sufficiency and Truth.
Vow of Charity (Major) - Character must donate 10% of their wealth, treasure and earnings to Charity. Whenever the party divides treasure, the Paladin must take a full share and mark 10% to be donated to worthy causes at the earliest convenience. The character breaks this vow if they do not take the requisite share and, if they do, they do not mark the money for charity. If they spend any of this money, they also break this vow.
Vow of Courage (Minor) - Character may never use the Withdraw action. They may never leave a Part Member or Henchman behind unless with their express permission. This vow is broken if the Character voids any of the above. If challenged to single combat by an opponent who is no greater than 3 Levels or Hit Dice above the Paladin, they also break this vow.
Vow of Honour (Major) - Character may not use ranged weapons, throwing weapons or offensive spells with range against opponents who lack these weapons, unless the Paladin lacks Line of Access, such as when dealing with flying enemies. The Character may not start combat where they outnumber their opponents, unless the highest Hit Dice of their opponent is higher than the party's highest. The character is forbidden from making Killing Strikes. This vow is broken if the Character voids any of the above.
Vow of Moderation (Minor) - Character cannot eat enough food to become Well Fed. Character is also not permitted to drink alcohol, unless in a ritual or religious context, or to become Intoxicated by anything they have intentionally consumed with knowledge of its capacity to intoxicate. If they do so, they break this vow.
Vow of Self Sufficiency (Major) - Character may only possess 10 magical items. It includes armour, weapons and miscellaneous magical items including shields, quivers, cloaks, bracers, gauntlets, rings and other worn magical items. This does not include potions, scrolls, wands, ammunition and use-based items. The character breaks this vow if they keep magical items for themselves with the intent on using them or selling them beyond this limit - it does not count if they are merely carrying the item for the sake of another.
Vow of Silence (Major) - Character may not speak or cast spells with a Vocal component. If they do so, they break this Vow.
Vow of Truth (Major) - Character may not act in a means that is contradictory to their alignment - a Lawful Good Paladin may not steal nor pillage but it may be reasonable for them to take the weapons of a group of bandits. They may not have Hirelings, Followers or Henchmen of a differing alignment, unless the intent is consistent with the character's alignment - a Lawful Good Paladin may hire an Evil Wizard to make a Hospital without breaking this Vow or work with a Chaotic Neutral Bandit in their efforts to redeem them. This vow is broken if the Character voids any of the above.
Breaking a Minor Vow increases their level of Tainted Paladin by 1. Breaking a Major Vow increases their Level of Tainted Paladin by 2. Vows are only broken consciously - a character does not suffer a penalty for having done it whilst being Dominated or as a consequence of a Suggestion. Attempting to assert control on a character in a manner that would break a Vow gives them an immediate new Save, and an additional +3 if a Major Vow or a +1 if a Minor Vow.
