Health Recovery refers to a character, by non-magical means, recovering lost HP, VP, System Shock and FP.

Recovery Circumstances

A character naturally recovers HP and VP depending on their Recovery Rate, which in turn is based on their Recovery Circumstances.

Recovery Circumstances are the general situation they are in and how easy or difficult it makes healing. It also refers to how they spend the majority of their time. Too much activity may cause them to move up the table – they might be able to get away with short periods of light activity during a resting period but even a little strenuous activity a day would move it up to counting as Light Activity.

A character also counts as resting, for the purposes of regaining FP, whenever they are not taking strenuous action. For purposes of removing Tired and Shattered, however, the character must be taking almost no action and focusing on rest and recuperation.

If a character is starving or dying of thirst, they gain no positive recovery rate regardless of how well rested they are until this condition is alleviated. If they are on ½ supplies, the penalties to recovery rate are stacked against positive recovery but cannot push it below 0.

Activity Level

The level of activity is determined by how much of the day is spent resting versus intense action.

If the character spends at least half the waking day doing passive subjects (such as reading) or resting, they are considered to be receiving Plentiful Rest at base. If they do not qualify for this, they are Resting by default.

If a character is constantly moved around, either by their own power, being on horse back, being in a cart or on a ship, increase the level of Activity by 1.

If a character fails a Hard or greater Physical skill check during a day, increase the Level of Activity by 1.

If a character receives more than 1/2 their HD in damage from a single attack, increase the Level of Activity by 1. If they instead receive more than their HD in damage from a single attack, increase the Level of Activity by 2.

If the character takes an action that would make them Tired, increase the Level of Activity by 1. If the character instead takes an action that would make them Shattered, increase the Level of Activity by 2.

For every level of Bad Sleep suffered, increase the Level of Activity by 1.

Recovery Rate Table

Fatigue Points are recovered by using the Rest action. Resting or getting Plentiful Rest, as per the Activity Level, for half an hour allows a character to make a check to recover from Tired or an hour to make the check to recover from Shattered.

Recovery of Health (HP, VP and System Shock) is considered on a daily to weekly basis.

Regeneration

Regeneration has a special effect on Recovery.

If a character has Regeneration, they recover the amount of HP specified by Regeneration in that given time. Thus, a character who Regenerates 1 HP in ten minutes will gain this all day until they've healed fully - in this case, they would Regenerate a total of 144 HP a day.

To determine how many VP a character recovers from Regeneration, increase the unit of time listed by Regeneration by two steps, as per Time. For instance, a character who regains 1 HP in ten minutes will regain 1 VP per Day.

To determine how many System Shock Points a character recovers from Regeneration, increase the unit of time listed by Regeneration by one step, as per Time. For instance, a character who regains 1 HP in ten minutes will regain 1 System Shock Point per Hour.
